Cats Are Harder Than Dogs, and We Plan for That

With cats, the markings are everything — and almost none of them are symmetrical. A tuxedo cat's white bib sits high and narrow on one cat and spills halfway down the chest on another; put it in the wrong place and it stops being your cat. Calico patches never repeat, so our artisans map where the orange and the black actually fall across her face. An orange tabby lives or dies on the stripe spacing and the M on the forehead; a gray tabby needs the cooler undertone that keeps it from drifting brown. A long-haired cat gets the ruff and the tail volume built into the sculpt, not painted on flat.

If You Have a Black Cat, Read This First

A solid black cat is the hardest cat to photograph, and the hardest to paint. At this size, black on black flattens into a silhouette, so our artisans layer warm and cool tones by hand until the cheeks, ruff, and tail read as separate shapes in normal room light. Your part is the photo: take it near a window in indirect daylight, no flash, with the light coming from the side rather than from behind you. Side light is what makes black fur show up.
